Dissolution of a Civil Partnership

In Ireland, civil partnership dissolution refers to the legal process of ending a registered civil partnership. A civil partnership is a legally recognised relationship between two people of the same sex, offering similar rights and responsibilities as marriage. Dissolving a civil partnership involves the termination of this legal union, allowing both parties to move forward separately.

The Marriage Act 2015

Since the commencement of the Marriage Act 2015, it is no longer possible to register a civil partnership in Ireland. Existing civil partnerships are still valid, however should a couple decide to marry, the civil partnership will be dissolved.
